AWF has developed a WASH-Focused Humanitarian Contingency Plan (HCP) for Jacobabad, Khairpur, Umerkot, and Daddu districts in Sindh, addressing climate-related challenges and humanitarian crises. This plan aligns with the National Determined Contributions (NDCs) and aims to enhance disaster preparedness and response in a region historically prone to severe droughts and floods, including the devastating 2022 floods. AWF was able to organize contingency plans that were tailored to the spatially specific disasters historically occurring in both the region and the districts under observation.
Key Achievements:
Framework Development: Created a framework for climate change mitigation and adaptation, aligned with NDCs.
Risk Assessments: Conducted detailed assessments of climate-related risks, focusing on disaster risk reduction, climate change, and water scarcity.
Contingency Planning: Developed targeted strategies and contingency plans in collaboration with local authorities for timely and effective responses during crises.
Methodology:
Literature Review: Conducted a thorough review of existing policies and disaster management plans.
Vulnerability Assessment: Evaluated district susceptibility using relevant indicators to understand vulnerabilities.
Stakeholder Engagement: Worked with public institutions, humanitarian organizations, and local leadership to develop and implement context-specific recommendations.
Impact:
The HCP enhances disaster preparedness and response, allowing for proactive measures and effective management of humanitarian needs. It ensures timely resource utilization and collaboration among stakeholders to address both immediate and long-term disaster challenges.
